Happy New Year All from the nut in KACKMO!

I found the Historical Timeline on the Arctic Submarine Laboratory website and thought I had found the single most authoritative site I would ever need for submarine deployments to the arctic.I was wrong! I bought a cover tonight from the USS Archerfish (SSN 678) from 1991... no where is the Archerfish shown to have deployed to the arctic in 91. So, I e-mailed 4 crewmembers from the Archerfish during that period and found out that after departure from Bremerton, they did ICEX in 1991.Isn't Al Gore's invention the best ;-)

A HAPPY AND A HEALTHY NEW YEAR TO ONE AND ALL.Morrissey covers are being sent to the Vet Shut-in. I have a few, as I have a few karchers, just in the name of being "complete."

Your New Year resolution: put new batteries in your smoke detectors. Some 160 residents of an apartment complex near me are spending the weekend in a motel after one of their neighbors tried to put out a grease fire in the kitchen with water! At least, thanks to smoke detectors, none of them are spending the weekend in the hospital.

Rich Hoffner:
Geee!! I thought I was the only one cutting stamps off Morrissey covers and throwing them away! Small world.
To add fuel to the add on fire.... There are cachet makers out there who make cachets and paste them right over the top of existing cachets, and others who add computer scaned pictures and text to other artist's covers that already have cachets. So, it just "shows to go ya" that if there is away to alter a cover, put your spin on it, and sell it, it has been done.

Yes you are right, all the Navy is called "Uncle Sam's Canoe Club", but as a "Birdfarmer" when those "Greyhounds" came along side they looked like Canoes to us.LOL

Oh, Happy New Year from Las Vegas. Time change here is driving me crazy! Forgot to turn my cell phone off the first night here and it went off at 6AM, a call from my office, where it was 9AM. I learned real quick to shut it off every night.
RH pacoastie@verizon.net Friday, December 31, 2004 at 17:23:29   24.120.140.135
On Morrisey cachets. Some are art worthy with some connection to the event. Others are sort of (to be polite) trash. He was not very discriminating when it came to a postmark, no postmark, unreadable postmark, uncancelled stamps, etc. Before he passed away, I traded with him on a regular basis, one for one. He would send a batch and I would do the same in return. I threw a lot of the covers in the trash. Eventually I distanced myself from him, due to the cancel /lack of cancel issue. I knew his cachets were added on, and I think everyone who delt with him at the time knew it, dealers included. So, now, I'll bet there are dealers who come about his cachets now and list them for sale with little and or no knowledge about him. How can anyone say a dealer must know all there is to know about a cover artist, ad-on cachet producer, or FANTASY cover producer?
Jake Friday, December 31, 2004 at 17:23:01   65.96.57.109
Good Evening GentlemenA Very HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!!!
RH pacoastie@verizon.net Friday, December 31, 2004 at 17:14:09   24.120.140.135
Larry LaFoe - you will learn more about ad-on cachets and all other cahets as you gain experience. It won't come overnight. I'm still learning, day by day. Our chapter did sponsor several arctic sub covers a few years back. We had some great contacts back then, with a COB aboard USS FULTON (now retired) and a retired Nuke boat sailor who worked at EB who gave us personal access to crew members to do our covers. Wish we could still do that, but our contacts are no longer in place. Check Decatur covers on this website, you can locate the three or four covers Arctic that are still available.

The real centennial for us to celebrate is the appointment of the first Navy mail clerks back in 1908. Plans are already underway to have a big convention in 2008 for this anniversary.

Arctic sub covers post-1998 will be dificult to find. Most collectors, if they got any back, only received one (1) cover. This keeps the true collector happy and the dealers out of the mix. Many covers were postmarked months after the NP crossing because the Arctic Research folks rode the boat back to home base then returned to San Diego. Many NP trips were known, but no covers exist. Jack Treutle in Keyser West Va keeps up with Arctic covers.
Roger Friday, December 31, 2004 at 14:35:02   69.40.18.4
Hi Guys,
Got some covers today form USS LINCOLN cancelled on Christmas Day. The PC indicated on the back of the covers that they were in port at Hong Kong on that date.
January LOG arrived today as well!
Happy New Year to all of you!!

I haven't been able to identify any Arctic sub covers post 98... does anyone know if any were made after 98?Rich,
Did the Decatur Chapter produce any arctic covers (at/in the arctic, not before depature or upon return) after the Archerfish?

Chas.Henry, Kind of thought you might appreciate the "Canoe" photos, yes they were taken from the VF, some off Korean waters in '51-'52-'53, others while she was doing ASW exercises and others from her tours in Nam
Richard Jones, my brother in law, the retired Master Chief was telling me the same thing about the JFK on Christmas Day, as thirty years in Uncle Sam's Canoe Club wasn't enough for him, he's back at his old trade working on Sonar Equipment for the Navy in Jacksonville and over at Pascagoula

I designed a cancellation for the USS Mesa Verde's Christening coming up on January 15th. The cancel is for its namesake, Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado. I received a call from the postmaster at Mesa Verde, and it looks like it's a go. I'll update an address here for mailing as the Christening date comes up in mid January. I believe the christening takes place in Pascagoula.
Dave Kent Thursday, December 30, 2004 at 21:42:26   68.228.152.24
I was a PAO in the Air Force on several different bases and don't think I ever got one request for cover servicing.
Larry LaFoe Thursday, December 30, 2004 at 21:35:37   68.57.210.254
Dave,Thanks for all the help!!!!!
Dave Kent Thursday, December 30, 2004 at 21:35:21   68.228.152.24
The Navy's really good about handling collectors' requests, mostly because we've been hitting them up since 1909 (ask any postal clerk if he knows about collectors and he'll nod his head). The Army and Air Force aren't as good about it, mostly because they get far fewer requests for covers.
Dave Kent Thursday, December 30, 2004 at 21:33:01   68.228.152.24
Some mail clerks are better at hitting the date you ask for than others. Because a ship may be deployed and not receiving mail regularly, you need to send a request for a specific postmark date well in advance. Even then you are taking a chance -- see postings below of gripes that covers were not postmarked as requested. However, we need to keep in mind they the mail clerk's main job is to serve his shipmates and official mail, not to handle requests from collectors.
Larry LaFoe Thursday, December 30, 2004 at 21:28:28   68.57.210.254
Are they pretty receptive of placing a specific date in the dial?
Dave Kent Thursday, December 30, 2004 at 21:28:01   68.228.152.24
Some PAOs are better at handling covers than others. Occasionally we find a boat that never "answers" requests for covers, and then maybe two years later suddenly everyone's covers come back. Reason: a new PAO who took his job seriously.
Dave Kent Thursday, December 30, 2004 at 21:26:35   68.228.152.24
Most subs don't have postal clerks as such, although this seems to be changing. We have usually sent covers to the Public Affairs officer as every boat has a PAO (despite the title, it's usually a chief). Almost every boat has a rubber stamp cachet they will put on your cover, but depending on what the boat's doing it may be a while before they arrive at a place where they can mail your covers back.
Larry LaFoe Thursday, December 30, 2004 at 21:23:57   68.57.210.254
Who's attention do I send covers to be cancelled? Postal Clerk?
Dave Kent Thursday, December 30, 2004 at 21:22:53   68.228.152.24
Sub don't get mail. or much of anything else, while literally underway because it's too difficult (read dangerous) to try to get something onto the sloping wet deck. However, if they are on a long deployment they may make stops at planned locations to pick up/send mail and other items -- spare parts, food, and so on.
Larry LaFoe Thursday, December 30, 2004 at 21:20:18   68.57.210.254
Dave, Subs don't receive mail underway... correct?
Dave Kent Thursday, December 30, 2004 at 21:15:38   68.228.152.24
The Navy tends to be pretty secretive about ship's movements. There's not much on the Web. Of course, if you live in New London, Conn., you just go down to the local WalMart and look at the jackets the men are wearing. If you see a lot of RICKOVER patches, you can bet she's in port.

Hi all -Here I go, embracing the Tar Baby: may I have your opinions on an ancient add-on?
I have several 1935 covers with 1937 Xmas Seals pasted over the delivery address. (Some on eBay if you want to see pix.) The seals come off cleanly with a damp sponge.
Should I, or should I not, remove the 1937 add-ons from 1935 covers? Does the Xmas Seal add value, or detract? How about 1940 Wildlife Fund seals, or 1956 Boys Town seals, on the same 1935 covers?
At present I plan to leave the Xmas Seals (cataloged in Scott) and the Wildlife Seals (very attractive) and remove the others. Wadda ya tink?

Larry, Try putting the ship's name in a google search, i.e. "USS Nimitz" and see if you get the offical homepage. From there you can click on to command or leadership for the CO, XO and CMC.

The 26th MEU's current MSEs consist of the following:
Battalion Landing Team, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines: an infantry battalion reinforced with Light Armored Vehicles, M198 155 mm Howitzers, Assault Amphibian Vehicles and M1A1 Main Battle Tanks. Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron - 162 (Reinforced): a CH-46E Sea Knight squadron reinforced with CH-53E Super Stallions, AH-1W Super Cobras, UH-1N Hueys and AV-8B Harriers. MEU Service Support Group - 26: provides logistics, transportation, engineering, medical, and dental support. Once the MEU is formed, completes pre-deployment training and is designated special operations capable (SOC), it provides geographic combatant commanders a potent, highly adaptive, rapid reaction force capable of conducting multiple and concurrent missions in support of a spectrum of operations, in virtually any environment.
The 26th MEU will deploy aboard U.S. Navy ships as part of the Kearsarge Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG). The ships of the Kearsarge Expeditionary Strike Group will include, in addition to the USS Kearsarge (LHD-3), the Ashland (LSD-48), Ponce (LPD-15), Gonzalez (DDG-66), Normandy (CG-60), Kauffman (FFG-59) and Scranton (SSN-756).

Another note worth passing along to you. Last year, a citizens group in Ottumwa, Iowa, planned on receiving from the US Navy the ex-USS Ottumwa, a Navy Tug, and transporting it from the West Coast to the Mississippi River, then up-stream to the Missouri River, then transporting it to Omaha/Council Bluffs region, then over landby truck? to Ottumwa, IA. It will be part of a casino operation/museum there in Ottumwa. Anything to make a buck it seems anymore.

Our inland waterway here in KC, or what I call KACKMO! Is going through it's usual dredging. Apparently they are going to attempt to move one of the former casino's downstream to the Gulf! Whatever are they thinking of, it be cheaper to build one, then these floating gambling halls.

Just cause he is a former shipmate doesn't mean won't bid against him for a VF I want. LOL
After all I'm the kind of guy that has been known to bid against his wife at stamp auction.

Managed to get Dick Z. to join the USCS, when he came to the VF reunion here on the Cape. Happened to have my VF Cover collection on display on one of the tables in our large hospitality room and he informed me he also was collecting VF covers, so suggested he join the USCS, which he did, thanks to Steve Shay following up on it.

Larry LaFoe: Sorry, but I do not wish to sell my back issues of ICE CAP NEWS. I consider them my primary reference source for information on polar covers. I searched for over a year to find a complete set available for sale. I puchased them from a fellow USCS member.
Mike Kaup Tuesday, December 28, 2004 at 21:00:09   4.179.33.143
Larry LaFoe, When I first got interested in Naval covers I purchased a Morrisey ad-on cachet believing it was contemporary to the postmark. It was not marked as an add-on and the ebay dealer (one of the biggest) did not describe it as such. After looking closely at it I decided that it wasn't contemporary and tossed it into my fireplace. I haven't bid on a single cover auctioned by that dealer since then (even though he NOW describes add-ons properly) and never will. You can argue it in all directions but nothing succeeds like voting with your pocket book.
Dave Kent Tuesday, December 28, 2004 at 19:52:29   68.228.152.24
Relax about the cachet stuff, please. This isn't the New York Stock Exchange. We're just a bunch of guys collecting old used envelopes with pictures on them. Smile and enjoy them!

My missing USS Yorktown Decommissioning cover finally turned up. The envelope was unopened with the notation "Ship Decommissioned-Return to Sender". I sent them on 25 Oct after exchanging emails with the Decomm Coordinator and the PC. Best laid plans of mice and men...Fortunately, I got them back in time to forward to Pascagoula for a USPS cancel.
Lots of interesting emotional chatter about add-ons. I'll bet that wherever Morrissey is, he's laughing his ass off!!!
Larry LaFoe Tuesday, December 28, 2004 at 17:14:40   68.57.210.254
Roger, If a cachet maker marks their add-on cachet, then they shouldn't be offended by those of us who feel it is inappropriate for those that do not mark their add-on cachets. Why would you take offense to something you don't do?
Roger Tuesday, December 28, 2004 at 17:08:40   69.40.18.4
Dave forgot to mention the Bud's cachet, that is featured on the USCS Website, is an ADD ON cachet. Bud would have truly resented some of the comments about add on cachets and thier producers that have been in this chat room the past couple of days!!as he like myself have never tried to deceive anyone about our covers being ad ons.

Larry LaFoe: The two best sources of information about arctic philately are USCS data Sheet #26, that John Young recommended to you, and back issues of the ICE CAP NEWS published by ASPP. I was able to acquire a complete set of Ice Cap News hard copies a year ago and have learned a lot from them. Good hunting.

Chas Henry Tuesday, December 28, 2004 at 12:54:29   64.168.104.154

If you wish to visit the new Mare Island Museum you should call ahead of time. The museum does not have regular hours. They also have a great full tour of Mare Island which would include the museum. I also heard that a new museum will be opening at the Decommissioned Moffett Naval Air Station in Mountain View, CA in February of 2005. NASA-Ames Research Center also has a museum there.
Dave Kent Tuesday, December 28, 2004 at 11:36:34   68.228.152.24
The NAUTILUS cover hiding on our website is the work of Alton "Bud" Arrington, a tremendously skilled artist who died earlier this year. He had plenty of money and always donated his covers to our auctions at conventions and regionals. The USCS probably made well over a thousand dollars by selling his donated art over the years.
Dave Kent Tuesday, December 28, 2004 at 11:29:25   68.228.152.24
At the last Nathan Hale Chapter meeting it was announced that the JIMMY CARTER commissioning has been pushed back to Feb. 19. The ship is so many years overdue that a few more weeks won't matter. We understood that the problem this time was getting Jimmy and his wife to the event.

Larry L - go to this URL and tell me this is a fraud, or that it does not ad value to the cover. I would suspect that without the cachet, this is a two or three dollar cover. With the cachet, it is worth perhaps $125 or more. The original owner did it for his own benefit and his love for submarines. I cheer all cachetmakers! Guess it's because I are one!URL: http://www.uscs.org/naut.htm

Larry L - Wow, my grand-dad engineered on the PRR out of Pittsburgh - hauled the Broadway Limited during the '50s. I've already found some nice covers, cards, and stamps for that area. (The oldest is a 1929 PRR postcard that "could" have been written by my grandmother...)

I have a cable modem and tend to keep multiple sites up simultaneously... this being one of them. I'll see what DD-type covers I have from that period. My grandfather used to work for PRR in Crawfordsville, Indiana... a long-long-time ago.
Chas Henry Monday, December 27, 2004 at 23:23:14   64.168.104.154
Hi Larry L - You're on quite a long "watch" here! (I had to take a nap myself.) To answer your question, I'm especially interested in DD-type covers from 40s, 50s, and early 60s, but also others related. Also railway, especially PRR. And then whatever strikes my fancy among FDCs/cachets in general.
Chas Henry Monday, December 27, 2004 at 22:43:38   64.168.104.154
BTW, has anyone ever come across this poem that starts out
"There's a carrier at anchor just beyond the harbor's pale, and a fleet of trim destroyers in the bay.
And the morning mist is shattered by a sudden siren's wail, for the men-'o-war are getting underway."
I think I found it in an All Hands magazine when I was in during the '50s. Probably 6 verses long, but I cannot remember the rest of it...

"Good Evening! My son, who is currently in the US Navy and serves on the USS Spruance (DD-963) is the reason I am interested in this ship [cover.] This ship will be de-commissioned in March of 2005. Would you please keep my name and email address in the event a postcard is issued for this ship's decommissioning. Also, he will be transferring to the USS The Sullivans. Do you have a postcard for that ship for the day it was commissioned? Thanks! Mary"

Honolulu papers say two USN ships are bringing relief, but did not name them. Usually they are gator navy ships as they have greater ability to use amphib type LC to get into shore where no facilities exist.
Dave Kent Monday, December 27, 2004 at 21:08:07   68.228.152.24
The government's real beef with Riser was his forged postmarks, which he sold for hundreds of dollars. They don't care anything about cachets unless the seller specifically tells the buyer they are originals and they are in fact reproductions (that's mail fraud). I doubt that the Postal Service would prosecute Riser today. Postal Inspectors assure me that their minimum fraud for prosecution is $25,000 or more.
Dave Kent Monday, December 27, 2004 at 21:05:25   68.228.152.24
There should be a pictorial cancel for the commissioning of JIMMY CARTER. The event will take place at Groton to send your covers to the postmaster (Groton, CT 06340).
SteveS Monday, December 27, 2004 at 19:56:11   4.246.233.47
Larry, there is a difference between forged cachets and add on cachets. An forgery may be an add on but it is also an attempt to defraud by copying some design that is more than likely scarce. An add on can be legitimate and not a forgery if it is not copying another design.Read the Philatelic Code of Ethics in the USCS Handbook. Doesn't Number 7 address your concerns?
Mike Monday, December 27, 2004 at 19:45:04   172.194.163.209
The reason you are seeing so many items listed on Ebay today is all insertion fees are only 10-cent for today only. Does anyone know if there is going to be a pictorial postmark for the Commissioning of the USS JIMMY CARTER? Is so where? Going to check out the new naval museum at Mare Island tomorrow.

Larry LaFoe Monday, December 27, 2004 at 18:30:51   68.57.210.254
I just found this: "On December 3, 1974, Charles Riser, doing business under the name Andromeda Covers, pleaded guilty to mail fraud charges after being caught by U.S. Postal authorities in a sting operation. It was alleged he had forged postmarks, cachets and autographs on space-related philatelic covers."
Apparently, the U.S. Postal Service feels forged cachets are as wrong as forged autographs and forged postmarks.

Belatedly, Merry Christmas to all and anticipatory Happy New Year full of health and prosperity.Looks like an interesting time around this page over the holiday weekend. My machine was taken over by the teenage girls -- an Ipod will do that. Interesting exchanges about add on/fantasy cachets. If we cant' agree can we at least agree that the indication of the add on must be placed on the front of the cover -- along with the cachet to ensure the integrity for future buyers. It's too much to expect that e-bay or every auctioneer will have the note, printed on the back, included in each description.
Freedom of speech is a a great concept. Larry LaFoe hit on an interesting point; we have far more covers, particularly from the 1930s, than there are interested collectors. The interest is decreasing not increasing, unfortunately.

Larry Wendell, USCS#L9379 Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:31:23   208.190.202.236
But the USPS in Guam is on his butt, as we speak, so maybe I'll still get my $$ or the covers back.
Jake Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:30:49   65.96.57.109
Larry LaFoeThere is only one cover up right now over the, at least in Naval Cover Catagory, but believe there may be some up under Covers Events.
Larry Wendell, USCS#L9379 Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:30:42   208.190.202.236
and shy $250.00.
Larry Wendell, USCS#L9379 Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:30:13   208.190.202.236
Jake, he did not get all my covers, though, just the BB's, CA's,CL's, some DD's, but the rest I still have.
Larry LaFoe Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:28:52   68.57.210.254
Chas what covers do you collect?
Larry LaFoe Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:28:09   68.57.210.254
Didn't know about stampoffers.com... had to go take a look. Didn't find anything though.
Larry Wendell, USCS#L9379 Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:26:06   208.190.202.236
The question was ask, "Do any of us work anymore?" Not me, no Thank you!
Jake Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:25:48   65.96.57.109
LKarry LaFoe Nope that wasn't me, in fact right now I'm not doing that much on E-Bay and what I do is mostly buying there for the last year, as I'm selling over on Stampoffers.Com
Larry Wendell, USCS#L9379 Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:24:55   208.190.202.236
If I'm stilling livin' maybe it will happen, but you know what they say about New Yorker's living in KOOKMO! Don't you, they have WunderLust in their veins!
Larry Wendell, USCS#L9379 Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:23:44   208.190.202.236
Hello Dick!
Jake Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:23:28   65.96.57.109
Larry W.Maybe we can hook up if I get out there.
Was thinking the same thing with Chas.Henry as think he said he was in the Scaramento area???
Larry Wendell, USCS#L9379 Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:23:16   208.190.202.236
Larry, in that sense of thething, then I agree with you about expulsion. I'm all for promoting cover collecting, but not de-frauding anyone in the process, it's wrong for us to condone it, and it should be placed on the Code of Ethic's as a new By-Law add-on.
Larry LaFoe Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:22:29   68.57.210.254
Jake are you the one that just posted 100s of subs today on eBay?
Larry LaFoe Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:21:58   68.57.210.254
Where do you live Larry?
Larry LaFoe Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:21:41   68.57.210.254
DD's? Destroyers?
Jake Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:21:23   65.96.57.109
Yes Larry W. did see it, really felt bad about that deal cause I sent him your way, but let you know the minute he reneged on being high bidder on my sub lots
Larry Wendell, USCS#L9379 Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:20:49   208.190.202.236
Branson, MO not too far, about 275 or so from here, I think.
Larry LaFoe Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:20:34   68.57.210.254
I'm sure it's legal to add a cachet to any cover you own... it's how you dispose of it that becomes an issue of ethics. If you properly (permanently) identify it as a "fantasy" cover to it's next owner, then I believe you've acted ethically. However, if you don't disclose it as an add-on cachet, then I believe it's fraud and is most probably illegal (but nothing more than a misdemeanor in the eyes of the law). However, I believe it should be a reason for dismissal in the eyes of the USCS.
Larry Wendell, USCS#L9379 Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:19:48   208.190.202.236
He apparently has several aliases, and is not a US Citizen in Guam, but actually is from the Philippines, and travel's to Guam. According to the Investigative unit at the Tamuning, Guam P.O..
Jake Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:19:13   65.96.57.109

Larry Wendell, USCS#L9379 Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:18:35   208.190.202.236
Hey, Jake, did you see my posting a few weeks back on this Imbat character?
Larry Wendell, USCS#L9379 Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:17:30   208.190.202.236
I almost type molar's in that last posting, I ain't got those either!
Chas Henry Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:17:18   64.168.104.154
Larry LaFoe -
No, do you have any DDs you'd like to sell?
Larry Wendell, USCS#L9379 Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:16:59   208.190.202.236
No Polar's here, Larry
Larry Wendell, USCS#L9379 Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:16:18   208.190.202.236
Neat, wish I could have been there for that. Did the tour through the Big Mass in 1995/96 on my whirlwind tour of all the EC that I never saw when I was too small to travel. Now I'm to fat to waddle.
Jake Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:14:14   65.96.57.109
Larry W.
A note on clean up, much is done by volunteers and they do have a small full time staff.
Was just up there at the end of Sept. as one of the events we had for the Valley Forge Reunion was a day at the COve,plus dinner served in the "Officers Ward Room"
Larry Wendell, USCS#L9379 Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:14:05   208.190.202.236
hat fellow I mentioned, Forester, I had a run-in with him on his add-on cachet's at one time back in the mid '80s just on that subject. He thought it was perfectly allright to do this. As mentioned below, if you are aware of this type of thing, and your willing to pay the price, that's okay, but does not make it any much more legal. Needless to say, he told me where to get off, so I did.
Larry LaFoe Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:13:38   68.57.210.254
Any of you 5 have any Polar covers for sale?
Larry LaFoe Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:13:03   68.57.210.254
Fahrenheit 451 was my favorite and last read. ;-)
Chas Henry Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:11:48   64.168.104.154
Larry LaFoe -Don't you bother with books anymore? I find them a useful adjunct myself.
Larry Wendell, USCS#L9379 Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:11:07   208.190.202.236
Jake, thing's are just peachy here in KOOKMO!
Hi SteveS, long time for me to be missing all the good folks here at chat, about 7 or more months if I'm not mistaken.
Larry LaFoe Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:11:02   68.57.210.254
I petitioning that it be added to our Code of Ethics.
Jake Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:11:01   65.96.57.109
Larry W.I read the same thing somewhere in the last month or so. Not sure if it will come about as there are a number of groups that help support the Cove, one big one being the TCS right here in Mass.
Larry LaFoe Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:10:29   68.57.210.254
Doesn't anyone here work for a living? ;-)
Larry Wendell, USCS#L9379 Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:09:49   208.190.202.236
I see what your saying, Larry, then it that term I think you be right. If they are selling the cover's under false pretenses, yes, I think to de-frock the member would be order. But on the other hand, has that member been told that this is a "No-NO!"?
Jake Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:08:06   65.96.57.109
Hi Larry W.Hows things in Kocokmo
Larry Wendell, USCS#L9379 Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:07:53   208.190.202.236
Jake, a question for you. Is it so, that I read that Ted Kennedy has signedinto action for money to be spend on the ships at Battleship Cover, to clean them up?
Larry LaFoe Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:07:43   68.57.210.254
Larry, my arguement has been, if done properly, there would never be a buyer beware need. If a member produces covers that aren't properly identified, then I think it's fraud and they shouldn't be members.
Larry Wendell, USCS#L9379 Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:06:22   208.190.202.236
It sounds like a Buyer Beware type of subject, or am I missing a view point here?
Larry Wendell, USCS#L9379 Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:05:16   208.190.202.236
As I have no cover's that have this sort of deal on, exceptfor a few from Wayne Forester in MA, but he gives them away, and are on PH ships cacheted covers.
Larry Wendell, USCS#L9379 Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:04:16   208.190.202.236
Interesting subject you guy's are on.
Larry LaFoe Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:03:17   68.57.210.254
Chas,I copied the definition of cachet directly from dictionary.com
People still own hardcopy books? ;-)
Chas Henry Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:02:56   64.168.104.154
Larry Wendell - I have asked this question quite some time ago of Karl Zurn and thus far, no reply.
Larry Wendell, USCS#L9379 Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:02:16   208.190.202.236
I'm glad I came over this afternoon, catching all of you on at the same time.
Chas Henry Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:01:49   64.168.104.154
Larry LaFoe -1. If the cachet isn't properly identified, of course it's a fraud. As for your other remarks, nowhere in any definition is a "cachet" synonomous with "postmark" (as "simultaneous"). From the New Merriam-Webster: (2) a feature or quality conferring prestige, also; PRESTIGE...(4) a design, inscription, or advertisement printed or stamped on mail. From the Oxford Dictionary and Thesaurus: (1) a distinguishing mark or seal, (2) prestige.2. A "motto" that's part of a cancellation would be just that --- not a "cachet".3.(a) If say someone like Thomas Kincaide were to hand-paint a cachet on a cover from the '40s, it might easily be worth 100s of dollars. (b) No, it's not OK for you to type in a notation asserting a certain origination of a cover. The most you can add, for whatever purpose, is a light pencil notation to that effect, but no one has to accept that as "final". (c) Your other examples are outright frauds and of course they're illegal.4. I couldn't pay $50 for any cover, even if I wanted to, but look back at 3(a)...
Larry Wendell, USCS#L9379 Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:01:38   208.190.202.236
same here, just have always been curious to it's function.
Larry LaFoe Monday, December 27, 2004 at 17:00:20   68.57.210.254
Larry... it does nothing for me?
Larry LaFoe Monday, December 27, 2004 at 16:59:50   68.57.210.254
Roger says he marks his cachets on both his current covers and when he adds them to older covers. This is between him and his client. I would probably even entertain someone adding a cachet to a worthless cover for it's artist appeal. But, I'm concerned about the cachets that are being added without any notation, purely with a profit motive as their motivation.
Larry Wendell, USCS#L9379 Monday, December 27, 2004 at 16:59:44   208.190.202.236

What is the bar in between the Reload and clear bar above and to your left? The one with the dashes in it.
Larry Wendell, USCS#L9379 Monday, December 27, 2004 at 16:58:27   208.190.202.236
Can I ask a somewhat naive question here?
Jake Monday, December 27, 2004 at 16:55:17   65.96.57.109
Larry L.
Is it not the art work that is added to the cover that increases the value in the eyes of the buyer.
Know I've bought add-ons from Roger, for the art work as much as for the cancel that is on it, in fact one or two of the covers pruchased from him directly alkready had the same cancelled covers in my collection and paid a hell of a lot less for them, but I wanted some of his art work that fit into my collection, he can tell you I turned number of them because the art work was not what i wanted even thou the cancel was.
Larry Wendell, USCS#L9379 Monday, December 27, 2004 at 16:54:57   208.190.202.236

Hello all!
Larry Wendell, USCS#L9379 Monday, December 27, 2004 at 16:54:01   208.190.202.236
I was reading everyone's take on applying cachet's after the fact. A person in New england who does this, and makes notations on the back that it was done by him, the add-on, is Dr. Wayne Forester.
Larry Wendell, USCS#L9379 Monday, December 27, 2004 at 16:51:04   208.190.202.236
Good Afternoon, Jake, Larry & Roger!
Jake Monday, December 27, 2004 at 16:50:40   65.96.57.109
HI LarryL and Chas. HenryHope you mates had a good ChristmasOh better open my eyes Hi ROGER
Larry LaFoe Monday, December 27, 2004 at 15:29:17   68.57.210.254
I just want to clarify the operative phrase in this debate: "Not properly identified." If someone choses to add-on a cachet that is properly marked... who cares. That's a deal where everyone is informed... I'm only debating the ethics of when only one person (the creator of the fantasy cover) has knowledge of the deception.
Larry LaFoe Monday, December 27, 2004 at 15:25:36   68.57.210.254
To state it simply, my belief is that the individual that produces a "fantasy" cover should be responsible for that cover. If a cachet is added to a cover from the 30s, etc., without it being properly marked, then I believe that to be deceit (a misleading falsehood)... yes, even fraud (a deception deliberately practiced in order to secure unfair or unlawful gain). These are my beliefs... it's not an atack against you or anyone for that matter. I just believe that is a member does something to deceive another member (including add-on cachets that are not properly identified), then that members shouldn't be part of the USCS.
Larry LaFoe Monday, December 27, 2004 at 15:16:42   68.57.210.254
Roger,Your misreading my posts and my behaviour. I've not said anything about me being right and that everyone else is wrong, I'm just stating my beliefs. Nothing personal has been said or directed to/at anyone. It is nothing more than a debate and thus far have only heard the ONLY reason why people believe they can and should be able to add-on a cachet to ANY cover is that they OWN it. No one has mentioned anything about who is responsible for these "fantasy" covers once they become available on the secondary market.
Dick Monday, December 27, 2004 at 15:04:22   207.69.139.11
I am a new member. I am looking for covers from the USS VALLEY FORGE CV45 CVA45 CVS45 and LPH8. Email is: dbzach@southwind.net. Thanks
Roger Monday, December 27, 2004 at 14:59:18   69.40.18.4
Larry Lafoe:
Your are getting way out in left field with your rants. And your arguments are getting bazaarly eclectic. Some of the descriptive adjectives/pronouns/nouns that you are using to make your point are getting very near personal in thier implications as to the person's character who makes/sells add on cachets. Your use of words like "fraud", "collusion", "deceptive", "unethical" etc. are inappropreate. I would suggest that you calm down, and get away form trying to force your point and will on others. A debate is one thing, but a stance of I am right and YOU GUYS ARE ALL wrong is never going to win points in a debate.
The bottom line is that if you do not like add on cachets ( and that IS your priveledge), DON"T BUY THEM, and let those that do like them buy them.
Larry LaFoe Monday, December 27, 2004 at 14:56:38   68.57.210.254
Chas,I've never known cachet to mean to "add value"... it's purest form means to press from the French word cacher?
It's updated meaning, relative to philately, is:
1. A commemorative design stamped on an envelope to mark a postal or philatelic event.
2. A motto forming part of a postal cancellation.
So, you're saying it's okay to buy a cover from September 2, 1945, from Tokyo Bay with a newly added cachet by someone of the famous signing during the surrender of Japan... even though, if done properly could easily add $100s of dollars to the value of the cover?
It's okay for me to add a simple little typewritten "Midway Island" notation to any cover I find dated between June 4-7, 1942?
It's okay for me to "replicate" a well-known cachet by another cachet maker onto another cover?
It's okay to add Sitka, Alaska to a 4-bar postmark absent of any markings?
If you spent $50 on a cover that was worth $2 before someone added a cachet 50 years later thinking it was contemporary to the period and subsequently found out it was a recent addition (HISTORY), would you sell it for the $5-10 it's now worth or would you let the next buyer decide?
Chas Henry Monday, December 27, 2004 at 14:34:18   64.168.104.154
I suggest that before this gets into arbitration someone take a look at the dictionary definition of "cachet" and see if it doesn't mean to "add value" to something. I think that's in fact the purpose of FDCs, etc., - to add value to the original STAMP, and rightly so. I doubt if stamp-collecting would have much future without the cover market. But then, this is just the view of a complete newcomer to it all. When or where a cachet is added would seem to be part of the HISTORY of the cover, adding further interest to its value.
Larry LaFoe Monday, December 27, 2004 at 12:30:26   68.57.210.254
If you own a cover and you make the decision to deface that cover... then keep it forever! When you tire of that cover... destroy it! When you die, ensure your executer destroys those covers! YES, you own it now, but someone else will buy that fantasy cover when you no longer own it. YES, collectors who have collected for years will be able to identify it as a "fantasy" cover... BUT what about those that are just beginning? You're stating that once you create a cover... once it leaves your hands it the responsibility of the dealer/collector to determine if it's a real cover or a "fantasy" cover.
Larry LaFoe Monday, December 27, 2004 at 12:26:42   68.57.210.254
But it's not right! All I've stated was that someone that does that shouldn't be a member of the USCS. Just because it happened in the past in the club doesn't mean we shouldn't prevent it in the future.
Larry LaFoe Monday, December 27, 2004 at 12:25:21   68.57.210.254
The irony is... there are SO many naval covers available, that we could add 10,000 new collectors and still not absord the available inventory. Even so, you can buy an original cover from the 20s/30s for $1 each and a cover with a cachet from the late 30s/early 40s for $1-2 each... even so, that same cover with a "fantasy" cachet will bring $10+... isn't it ironic!
RH pacoastie@verizon.net Monday, December 27, 2004 at 12:24:33   151.197.178.183
Larry - if you break the law, you suffer the consequences. If you ruin a cover you own, that your right. If you stamp a rubber stamp cachet onto a cover, collectors will recognise it for what it is, and ad-on cachet. Do you think a reader of Ice Cap News would not know that it was an ad-on cachet?
Larry LaFoe Monday, December 27, 2004 at 12:22:42   68.57.210.254
Back to my previous post:It appears my expectations of a higher standard of ethics is a moot point since the practice is already so embedded in the hobby and collusion is at the highest levels.
RH pacoastie@verizon.net Monday, December 27, 2004 at 12:21:00   151.197.178.183
The example you gave already happens. Knowlegable collectors see they for what they are, altered covers. Not headliners! You can pick tham out in a dealers stock on a regular basis. I would imagine that the dealer who has them in his boxes also recognises them as altered, but I would not expect him to throw them out or mark them in any way.
Larry LaFoe Monday, December 27, 2004 at 12:20:16   68.57.210.254
Once they leave your hands, they're on the "secondary market." Who ensures that a 10-year-old boy doesn't pay $10 for the cover you created thinking it's an unknown CONSTITUTION cover?
Larry LaFoe Monday, December 27, 2004 at 12:18:23   68.57.210.254
If I get a rubber stamp and create a new Operation Deep Freeze cachet... and then add it to the 100+ Operation Deep Freeze covers I have with no cachet... is that okay?
RH pacoastie@verizon.net Monday, December 27, 2004 at 12:17:43   151.197.178.183
Larry, it the free market, not fraud in my mind. As a matter of fact, I had a pile of covers from CONSTITUTION dated 1934 with no cachets, and I shared some of them with Roger to ad cachets on. I know the source of the covers, and the motive in that early era was to ad cachets to them. Roger did a great job. I kept two and sold them for $2.50, is that fraud? I also hand printed, a half tone photo in black and white to some of the same covers, addin gwording for the event to the covers (CONSTITUTION returns to homeport after West coast cruise) and I gave them away! No profit margin there. But, when they come on the market (I think I did nine of them) they may sell for a couple of bucks. Is that fraud? I don't think so.
Larry LaFoe Monday, December 27, 2004 at 12:15:06   68.57.210.254
I would even be willing to add "LL" to the FRONT or BACK of the cover... is that sufficient?
Larry LaFoe Monday, December 27, 2004 at 12:14:14   68.57.210.254
If I buy 10 plain black-and-white Dumonte cachets for $4 each and take my daughter's watercolor kit and take a couple of mintues to color them. I then sell them for $9 each... is that $50 worth of fraud?
RH pacoastie@verizon.net Monday, December 27, 2004 at 12:11:24   151.197.178.183
Larry - e-mail me when you have a chance and we can continue this discussion. I have to run, errands to catch up on.
Larry LaFoe Monday, December 27, 2004 at 12:10:46   68.57.210.254
How is adding a cachet to a cover from the 30s not fraud? If the original cover had $3 philatelic value, then a cachet is added and now the value is $12... is that not $9 worth of fraud?
RH pacoastie@verizon.net Monday, December 27, 2004 at 12:09:35   151.197.178.183
Best bet is that anyone who does not like ad-on cachets, don't buy them. I just started to sell covers on e-bay. I'll sell a cover with an ad-on cachet for twenty times what a cover with no cachet will sell for. Not that it matters a wit, but it does say something about the buyer.
RH pacoastie@verizon.net Monday, December 27, 2004 at 12:06:22   151.197.178.183
Larry you have a point, but a suggestion that a cachet added on is fraud, is somewhat misleading. Changing a cover to a registered cover, or adding a Hawaiian of Confederate stamp to a vintage cover, is a fraud! Not a fantasy. Fraud is illegal. Such actions probably violate the federal Hobby Act. How can anyone relate added artword to a cover as a fraud. I can't see it.
RH pacoastie@verizon.net Monday, December 27, 2004 at 11:58:31   151.197.178.183
Larry - I guess I am getting the point, as I read down previous messages. Are you are calling ad-on cachets "fantasy" cchets? For those with no ID as to who did them, I call them "mystery" cachets. I like all ad-on cachets, as long as they have a naval connection or are related to the subject of the original cover. I have sent covers to Roger, and other artists to do their magic for me. I don't find it offensive for someone to ad a cachet to a cover, printed or otherwise. I ad-on up to 150 cachets to covers after I get them back from the USPS or ships (printed on kelsey letterpress). Sometimes, it is six months after I get them back, depending on many circumstances, delays by the USPS, delays in getting suitable artowrk for the covers, ect. Would these be ad-on cachets? There are so many variables to this issue, there is no way for any organization to take actions against a cachet maker or producer. I see only one reason for any organization to take action on a cover with an ad-on cachet, that would be a counterfeit or copywright issue. I have an editorial written by Budd Arrington on the subject just before his death. It was sent to the editor but never published. He was irate at some of the comments he read in the Log on the subject. Let me know if you want a copy, perhaps hearing from someone who added his extreamly professional artowrk to covers will shed some light on the subject for you. Also chek back issued of the Log on the issue.

Does anyone have any back issues of "Ice Cap News" they would like to sell?
Larry LaFoe Monday, December 27, 2004 at 11:52:01   68.57.210.254
If someone adds gum to a stamp and doesn't tell the buyer that the gum has been added... is that okay? If someone free franks a stampless cover with a famous persons name... is that okay? If I sign a Prime Recovery Ship cachet with Gus Grissoms signature... is that okay? This discussion is simple to me... additions to covers are "fantasy" pieces and are deceptive practices. As such, any member caught doing such should not be a member of the USCS.
Larry LaFoe Monday, December 27, 2004 at 11:47:41   68.57.210.254
I stated that I believe we need to add deceptive practices, i.e., adding cachets to vintage covers without proper identification, to the Code of Ethics.
Larry LaFoe Monday, December 27, 2004 at 11:46:17   68.57.210.254
In my opinion, a fantasy cover is a cover with a cachet added years later (or anything for that matter... a stamp, a postmark, etc.)... not the original cover, modified by someone else without the original persons knowledge with the sole intent to profit, destruction of a philatelic item to create a new collectible... etc.Would we all not agree that adding a stamp to a cover is a "fantasy" cover (e.g., adding a zeppelin to an airmail cover)? Would we all not agree that adding a postmark to a cover is a "fantasy" cover (e.g., registered cancel to a non-registered cover)?
Then why is adding a cachet to a cover that originally did not have a cachet and the person that originally produced the cover had no intention of adding a cachet... not a "fantasy" cover?
RH pacoastie@verizon.net Monday, December 27, 2004 at 11:42:26   151.197.178.183
Larry - did you imply that the USCS needs a Code of Ethics? We do indeed have one in place.

Rather tacky note from Bruce. I'll wager it has been a long time, or possibly never, that his "offender" has been on this site! Bruce, if you have a beef, make official complaint to the USCS, not hang you wash out here. Seems like a daily event to read the same message here. There is a better way.

It appears my expectations of a higher standard of ethics is a moot point since the practice is already so embedded in the hobby and collusion is at the highest levels. It was worth a try to try to preserve the integrity of the hobby. Since it's too late for that, I'll just read as much as possible to become more knowledgeable of naval covers and try my best not to buy or sell a "fantasy" cachet.
I'm sure the offenders will miss this analogy, but here it is anyway: If I don't speed on the highway and you and some of your friends do... eventually it becomes the norm. If I say, we shouldn't speed, you'll say: "If speeding was such a bad thing, then they should have stopped the practice when so-and-so did it. I didn't start speeding until decades after others began speeding and only then after the passengers in my car asked me to start speeding. As a matter of fact policemen and politicians speed. The next time your on the road, you can see people speed." The reality is we all know it's WRONG... speeding and purposefully creating "fantasy" cachets... but it's become acceptable to those that benefit and ignored by those it doesn't affect.
I've received enough e-mails from USCS members to know that this is not an acceptable practice. BUT, it's such a hot button that no one is willing to upset the few to serve the many.
Larry LaFoe Monday, December 27, 2004 at 09:54:42   68.57.210.254
Roger,I see your mermaids everywhere, both your modern one's and the vintage one's you've added cachets to with markings on the front of the cachets and on the back of the covers. I've met or bought from all the dealers you mention. Again, I'm just addressing the deceptive practice of add-on cachets.
Roger Monday, December 27, 2004 at 08:33:40   69.40.18.4
Larry Lafoe:
Forgot to mention that I do have a line of modern naval and FDOI covers with my H/P cachets that I have been selling now for about 25 years. These too sell quite well. If you care to see any of these covers, there is good selection of them on Ebay. I do not sell any of my covers on Ebay myself at this time, but there are six or more USCS/AFDCS member dealers who do. Check them out and let me know what you think of the artwork. Go to Knight Philatelics or Malibu Philatelics Ebay Stores, or RKA Covers web site. You can also see my covers in Paul Huber's and Howard Tiffner's table at the next USCS Convention, or USCS Regional get together.
Roger Monday, December 27, 2004 at 08:20:40   69.40.18.4
Larry LaFoe:
I agree 100% with you that ALL ADD ON CACHETS SHOULD BE LABELED AS SUCH if they are not contemporaineous to the covers!! (On the back OR the front of the covers accordingingly) I am not at all "confused" with the issue you have presented.
I also agree with Stew. If you are passionate about the issue contact the President and have him bring it up at the next BOD meeting. If I am not mistaken the issue was tabled at the last BOD meeting for lack of interest, and the BOD did not feel it an important enough issue to get involved with what folks do with cover that they OWN. Aside from the labeling issue, I have no other problem with anyone making add on cachets to sell, or for thier personal consumption.
I have hundreds of such cachets in my personal naval and FDOI collections by other add on cachet artists who made them decades before I ever made my first one, three years ago. Some in my collection are labeled, some are not. If there was not a market for them, I, nor anyone else would have never made them to bigin with,or no one would buy them. In fact, I was asked to add cachets to covers by USCS naval and AFDCS FDOI collectors who had un-cacheted covers way before I ever made my first one to sell. And I continue to get covers from collectors who want me to add my artwork to their covers on a regular basis from both USC members and AFDCS members.
There are folks in this chat room who buy my add on cachets, and who have sent me covers to add cachets to. All of our most prominant USCS dealer members have at one time or another knowingly sold me uncacheted naval covers for the purpose of adding cachets, and who seeminlgy have no problem with the practice as long as the covers are labeled. Two of them even buy them back from me to re-sell. These two particular USCS member dealers also collect some of my add ons for their collections, and have sent me covers from their personal collections to add cachets to.

was posted aboard USS BURTON ISLAND (AG 88) on
February 22, 1947.

Larry LaFoe: Only cachet for Operation Windmill, 1947-48 are #10 envelopes printed by individual
aboard EDISTO (AG 89). Most were posted with the
icebreaker's Fancy cancel that has Little America
and South Pole in killers. You can see on ASPP website for great history of polar philatly.
As for Deep Freeze Ops- there envelopes printed
by several indidviuals i.e., Stobel and some other
stamp dealers. They were sold to collectors, who
sent them to ships and mail clerks at stations. It
should be noted that collectors were limited to
three covers for ships. After DF III, collectors
were limited to one cover per station, that is why
you see pencilled South Pole & Bryrd Station on
the front of the covers. Those ships not having
post offices aboard, dropped mail at McMurdo Sta.

john young Sunday, December 26, 2004 at 16:03:48   68.193.177.218
Larry LaFoe: Regarding polar covers:
Walter Crosby produced printed (black) envelopes
used by most of the ships that Participated in
Operation Highjump, 1946-47. All the ships were
provided with official "Highjump" cachet which
were applied to covers & mail from the ship.
As for Deep Freeze covers, philatelic mail
was machine canceled at Little America, South Pole Sta and Byrd Station that was uncacheted
(estimates nearly 500,000 pieces. All the ships
from DF I (except CGC EASTWIND) had post offices
aboard and they all had cachets. The main Task
Force 43 cachet was designed by Walt Disney and
a smaller version with wording has been used on
polar mail since DF II.

No Larry, there is no plan to confuse the issue. People who add cachets to a cover SHOULD so mark the cover, whether it is an original cachet but especially if it a reprise of an older cachet..

On the add-on issue, nothing really new. I see the difference between adding a cachet within a short period of time after the cover is received, and many years later. However, if it is noted on the back of the cover that it is an add-on cachet then there is nothing that can be done. The buyer can always refuse to buy. As for deceiving future collectors, that is why we have history. It is incumbent upon the buyer to keep him(her) self informed.

Mike,
I wouldn't think what you describe below is an "add-on" cachet. I think an "add-on" chachet is a cachet that that is not "of the era." An example of that would be an "add-on" that was added in year 2004 of a cancel dated 1941, 60+ years later. This is just my opinion.

Mike,I’m primarily discussing covers that were produced long before the cachet maker adds his or her cachet. Why would anyone want to add a cachet to a cover they didn't generate, other than to profit from the added cachet? If the add-on is permanently marked on the front cover, then a buyer can decide for themselves if they wish to collect these "fantasy" covers. However, if the add-on is marked discreetly or not at all... that is where I think we should be concerned.
Mike Sunday, December 26, 2004 at 13:47:40   172.194.163.209
Hope everyone had a nice Christmas. I don't mean to add fuel to the add-on-cachet covers being discussed, but I have a question. I don't add my cachet until I receive the cover back in the mail. Two of the main reasons are #1 Exactly where the postmark is placed on the cover (And as everyone knows on occasion the quality is poor) and #2 If the PC of the ship, at my request, adds on the ship's crest (crest come in different sizes and again exactly where on the cover is it). I do request where the postmark and cachet is to be placrd on the cover, but we are all make human mistakes. I don't consider this as add-on-cachets. Does anyone have a comment? Thanks.
Mike Sunday, December 26, 2004 at 13:18:51   172.194.163.209
Hi Larry.
Larry LaFoe Sunday, December 26, 2004 at 09:59:28   68.57.210.254
Roger,If you own a cover, you CAN and SHOULD do WHATEVER you want with that cover. However, once you offer the cover for sale, that is the point I am addressing.
My opinion is that if someone markets a cover they've added a cachet to that is meant to deceive (artificially increase that covers value), then we can and should remove that member from the USCS. As far as legal precedence... is there legal precedence to remove a member who doesn't consummate a transaction... NO, but we do it to protect our members! Legal-smegal... if it’s unethical, either by not following through on your dealings or trying to deceive another member... we can and should remove them from the USCS!
As a side note, shouldn’t an add-on cachet be marked on the front of a cover? If a cover is listed on eBay by someone who isn’t aware of the cachet makers code on the back of the cover and only displays the front of the cover, then both the buyer and seller are at risk of selling/buying a misrepresented cover.
This discussion could go on forever, but we all have to admit that we DO NOT own the covers we currently possess forever… YES, we can do whatever we want with the covers we currently own, but what is our responsibility to our hobby… our club… our peers? Should we not be as ethical as possible and if not, then should we, as members of this club, allow unethical members to commingle with ethical members? YES, marking the back of a cover that has a cachet added is a step… BUT is it enough? Is it sufficient to protect the next owner(s) of that cover? Can it be removed more easily as a standalone marking on the reverse then if it were part of the cachet on the front?
Net-net… if it’s allowed by a few members of the club, then eventually it becomes acceptable behaviour. Do the 1,400 members really want to buy covers from the 30s/40s/50s that had NO philatelic value without a cachet… with a cachet added today? Are the collectors of your cachets buying your artwork or are they buying the postmark? If they’re buying your artwork, then why not add your cachets on contemporary covers-or on a plain piece of paper? Current collectors are not at risk of buying properly disclosed covers with add-on cachets… but what about the next generation?
If this topic has been discussed ad nausea for over two years, then obviously it’s a matter of concern… enough said.
Roger Sunday, December 26, 2004 at 09:10:57   69.40.18.4
Larry Lafoe:
Cachets have been being added to naval covers and FDOI covers for as long as I can remember...decades. As long as the covers are marked as such, most collectors have no problem with them in any philatelic category. The way I see it, if you OWN a cover, you can do as you please with it. If add ons are not to a collectors likeing they should not bid on them or buy them.
I have produced hundreds of add on cachets myself and and mine are always labeled as such on the back of the cover. And, 90% of those who buy mine are USCS members who are totally aware that they are add on cachets. Sales are brisk!
The USCS as an organization has never taken an "official" stand on the topic and should not, and legally has no means to police the activity. It is not a criminal activity, nor are those who produce such covers sinister/deceptive in their endeavor! Unethical? that is is an individual decision and can not be governed via an edict by any philatelic organization, or enforced by expulsion from a club. If this were the case Larry, and there were a legal presidence to do so, it would have been done years ago when Morrissey and others first started adding cachets to naval covers.
This topic has been discussed in this chat room to the point of adnausium in the past two years, and the consensous seems to be that as long as the covers ARE labeled as an "add on cachet", no one is being duped or misled. There are some cachet makers in the USCS who presently do not do this, but in most cases, it is readily apparent that the cachet was added. Several of us who regularly participate in this chat room add cachets to naval covers.
The "seller"( not just the producer) of an add on cachet has an obligation to the buyer as well, to tell him if a cachet was added if he KNOWS that is was added.

A while back was involved with a USCS member who was bounced from the USCS for his shady dealings and not following thru as a high bidder on auction items.
Think the USCS trys to police its members as best they can.As for add-ons, my feelings is it your cover, if you want to put an add-on its up to you,but should be marked as such
Larry LaFoe Saturday, December 25, 2004 at 22:05:55   68.57.210.254
I have to admit, I'm a member of a LOT of collecting groups and the USCS is a very active and very dynamic and engaging group. I haven't been a member long enough to know if it's the actions of a few that benefit the 1,400 members or if everyone contributes there fair share. Regardless, there's only two things I've noted that I think would benefit the members... online auctions-benefit the USCS (increased profit, potential new membership, etc.), the sellers (higher sales price), the buyers (easy access), and generally, the members as a whole & a "Code of Ethics" to include a mechanism to ensure that when members buy from other members, that they receive what is represented by their peers.

Adding a cachet after the fact and not identifying it as such sounds un-kosher to me. I am not sure whether it would be grounds for dismissal. I am a board member but I am now speaking for myself. I would think that the issue would have to be brought to the board. This is not the place to argue that case.

Yes to the BRYCE CANYON question.
Larry LaFoe Saturday, December 25, 2004 at 21:59:28   68.57.210.254
What if a member adds a cachet without properly identifying it as a newly added cachet? Should that be grounds for removal from USCS?
Larry LaFoe Saturday, December 25, 2004 at 21:58:14   68.57.210.254
Are you asking about the Bryce Canyon covers Jake sold?
Stewart B. Milstein Saturday, December 25, 2004 at 21:58:04   12.72.119.196
My position is well known. It is your cover to do with as you please. However, if you add a cachet you should so note on the back of the cover who you are, and that it is an add-on cachet. I do not believe in reproducing old cachets without noting that you have updated them. Then there is the arguement about whether some covers are so special that they ought to be left untouched. For me, it depends on the ship. I generally feel that historic documents, such as covers, and especially older and classic covers, ought to be left alone.
Larry LaFoe Saturday, December 25, 2004 at 21:57:39   68.57.210.254

It depends upon: 1. condition, 2. subject, 3. quality of the cancel 4. quality of the cachet, 5. location in the killer bars.Generally combat ships do much better than auxilaries.

LarryJust sold a five cover lot for $2.00 of some odd Bryce Canyon AD36 covers I picked up that I had no use for. Felt good getting the $2.00
Larry LaFoe Saturday, December 25, 2004 at 21:51:21   68.57.210.254
That's my line of work... a fiduciary agent. I'm working with them to act as a conduit for their covers. What are the expectations of the circuit... $5+ covers?
Stewart B. Milstein Saturday, December 25, 2004 at 21:51:14   12.72.119.196
Hi Thad.
Stewart B. Milstein Saturday, December 25, 2004 at 21:50:52   12.72.119.196
A cover is only worth whjat someone else is willing to pay for it. I see a lot of covers, and some sellers are out of touch with reality. The reason they have such a large inventory is their prices prevent them from being sold.
Stewart B. Milstein Saturday, December 25, 2004 at 21:49:12   12.72.119.196
Larry - the only people who can sell via the sales Circuit are USCS members. If you want to act as their agent, you would work it out with them. The USCS would take its 20% commission on all sales. I cannot, and do not, price covers. I will tell a member if I think the prices are way out of line, but I do not want to be a pricing agent.
Larry LaFoe Saturday, December 25, 2004 at 21:47:49   68.57.210.254
At least that's what I think they're worth... you know I've been collecting covers since August, 2004, so I am an expert! ;-)
Larry LaFoe Saturday, December 25, 2004 at 21:47:00   68.57.210.254
The only problem with the dealer is they think EVERY cover they have is worth at least $5... some are $2-3 covers.
Larry LaFoe Saturday, December 25, 2004 at 21:45:19   68.57.210.254
Paul was selling the Sales Circuit. I mentioned it to a couple of collectors and a dealer in town. They have probably 1,000 covers (30s/40s) amongst them and none of them collect or have knowledge of their worth. They're just covers they accumulated over the years through other groups they've purchased and have them setting in piles in their houses or office.

StewJust had a bunch of "proof Cancels sent to me, in the lot were several from the DENEBOLA, sure brought "Sully" to mind in a hurray, used to send him any thing I picked up from that old gal
Stewart B. Milstein Saturday, December 25, 2004 at 21:44:05   12.72.119.196
Larry - yes, it was quite a run-on, but it does make sense.
Stewart B. Milstein Saturday, December 25, 2004 at 21:43:06   12.72.119.196
As it is, whether I am in Bklyn or in Tucson my wife and I have separate rooms for our respective hobbies and interests.
Stewart B. Milstein Saturday, December 25, 2004 at 21:42:35   12.72.119.196
Jake - the joke is when the man was told by his wife that it was her or the collection, his response was that he was going to miss her.
Larry LaFoe Saturday, December 25, 2004 at 21:42:32   68.57.210.254
As far as collecting everything, we upgrade as far as quality and limit quantity as we progress in all of our collections. It can be limiting when we begin collecting something new... we try to buy as nice quality as we can find, but sometimes in the initial stages of collecting something new, we may pass on a great item at a great price since we're not as knowlegeable as we should be and we're trying to buy too nice of quaility when it may be the best known. (was that a run-on sentence?)
Stewart B. Milstein Saturday, December 25, 2004 at 21:41:34   12.72.119.196
Larry - if you set up at Oregon, then good for you. If it does not work out that way, then the Sales Circuit is at your disposal.
Jake Saturday, December 25, 2004 at 21:40:50   65.96.57.109
Makes me kind of glad I only collect Birdfarms, other wise the Mrs. would send me packing even tho she to is a stamp collector in her own right.
Larry LaFoe Saturday, December 25, 2004 at 21:39:42   68.57.210.254
Stew,I was telling Paul Helman I was hoping to get enough covers cheaply enough to setup at the Oregon show next year.
Larry LaFoe Saturday, December 25, 2004 at 21:38:33   68.57.210.254
Stew,I was reading John Young's 'Navophilately Before the USCS, 1930-32' on the USCS site and saw that they were selling cachet covers for $1 each in the early 30s! Just think, 70+ years later and the USS Oregon Chapter is selling cachet covers for the same price... what a BARGAIN!
Stewart B. Milstein Saturday, December 25, 2004 at 21:37:58   12.72.119.196
Larry - if you cannot use all that material, have you considered using the sales Circuit as a means of disposing of your extras?
Stewart B. Milstein Saturday, December 25, 2004 at 21:36:50   12.72.119.196
Larry - if you collect everything, where do you put it all?
Larry LaFoe Saturday, December 25, 2004 at 21:36:02   68.57.210.254
The group I'm in the process of buying has a lot of RPPC (Real Photo Postcards) from the 30s with the ship's postmark and some with cachets. They're really pretty neat! The ship's look like they were taken in Puget Sound.
Stewart B. Milstein Saturday, December 25, 2004 at 21:35:40   12.72.119.196
Sorry - got called away. Some wants me to send 70+ covers from the OREGON listing but the person does not seem to be a USCS member. I had to tell him that I would conditionally accept his order but would not fill it until his check cleared. If, in the meantime, a USCS member ordered what this guy wanted, then the USCS member would be served first if there were not enough covers to go around.
Larry LaFoe Saturday, December 25, 2004 at 21:34:17   68.57.210.254
My wife and I collect EVERYTHING. I was in the Navy from 81-92 and since I collect Indiana Stampless covers, it was just a natural transition to Naval covers. I went to the 2004 USCS show in Indy and met a lot of the members, they reminded me of being back in the Navy so I bought a few of the covers at the auction. From that point until now, I've collected Navy Recovery Force, Operation Deep Freeze, Classics, USS Yosemite, USS California, Bird Cachets, and am still looking for more to collect. I just purchased a group of almost 1,000 covers, and am in the process of buying another group of anywhere from 2-4,000 covers from the 30s from an elderly lady in southern Indiana. I suspect that group will spark another collection or two!
Jake Saturday, December 25, 2004 at 21:30:55   65.96.57.109
Next question is how long have you been collecting them?? What is your speciality?
Jake Saturday, December 25, 2004 at 21:29:34   65.96.57.109
Larry What got you into collecting Naval Covers??
Jake Saturday, December 25, 2004 at 21:28:55   65.96.57.109
LarryThat sounds like a good plan
Larry LaFoe Saturday, December 25, 2004 at 21:27:59   68.57.210.254
My father-in-law got a new, 2005, P.T. Cruiser. I've decided my New Year's Resolution is to be nicer... much nicer to my mother-in-law next year! ;-)

I'm fairly new to collecting Naval Covers and those are pretty much limited to "Birdfarms"
So maybe I'm not really a good one to give an opinion about an USCS Store on E-bay, but as a buyer & seller of stamps on E-Bay think i have a little knowledge in how things work on there. But it would be real nice to hear from some of the USCS members who are big time sellers on E-Bay
