USS Tattnall

USS TATTNALL

The destroyer Tattnall was commissioned in 1919. Like many destroyers built during the World War I build up, she was decommissioned just three years later. Recommissioned in 1930, Tattnall would become a training ship in 1934 and was still performing training duties when this cover was cancelled in 1937. Converted to a high speed transport during World War II, the ship would participate in actions in the Mediterranean and later in the Pacific. After earning three battle stars for her service, Tattnall would be decommissioned in December 1945 and sold for scrap in October 1946.

This cover with a Type 3 cancel was prepared by John Pregenzer. (He misspelled the name of the ship in the photo caption.) Pregenzer prepared photo cachets, simply gluing or stapling photos to covers. The photo on this cover appears to have come loose at one time and was re-stapled. Most of his covers were one of a kind covers or prepared in small numbers.
