USS SAN FRANCISCO

This cover shows a non-philatelic usage of a Walter Crosby cover. Mailed from a sailor aboard the USS San Francisco (CA-38), the letter was sent Air Mail, Special Delivery, Registered, probably to his wife. The marking on the face shows that the fees were paid by the sender. The back of the cover has two Type 9 San Francisco cancel dated September 13, 1940. The cover arrived in Seattle, Washington the next day as evidenced by a Seattle September 14, 1940 postmark as well as a Seattle Special Delivery postmark time stamped at 9:30 AM. The San Francisco had just been overhauled at Puget Sound Navy Yard a few months prior to this. She would sail for Pearl Harbor on September 29. The return address on the cover indicates that the ship may have been at Long Beach, California at the time of the mailing.
