  • Elgin Sink (07 Mar 2020 11:35pm EST) : Has anybody ever seen this web site?…first time seen by me … has USS, USNS, and shore station addresses plus a label process: https://www.navsup.navy.mil/public/ops$mailer.postal_display
  • Elgin Sink (06 Mar 2020 2:21pm EST) : Interesting history behind New ESB to be commissioned tomorrow in Norfolk: https://www.navy.mil/submit/display.asp?story_id=112293
  • Elgin Sink (05 Mar 2020 9:38pm EST) : Here are ICEX 2020 cover opportunities…https://www.navy.mil/submit/display.asp?story_id=112284
  • guest_4301 (05 Mar 2020 5:32am EST) : Ahoy Mates,
Returned home from FLA spring break, picked up the mail and found no POLAR STAR covers. Guess, my requests are
    sitting in Seattle. Oh, well!

Found rare Stamp Shop on Dixie Hwy with boxes of naval covers- spent three hours and came up with some treasures
that will appear in future columns

  • Neal Mills (04 Mar 2020 11:59am EST) : The 757 phone numbers for Lincoln are dead but I was able to get a San Diego phone number for the quarterdeck. The mailing address for CVN 72 hasn’t changed yet. Its still FPO AE 09520.
  • guest_4914 (03 Mar 2020 3:33pm EST) : NEAL MILLS: TRY A PHONE CALL TO THE SHIP’S QUARTERDECK: 757 400 4957 AND SEE IF THEY CAN HELP
  • Neal Mills (02 Mar 2020 2:26pm EST) : Does anyone have a new FPO AP mailing address for USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN 72)? She arrived in San Diego on January 20th but the Navy SNDL and NAVSUP Postal site still show a FPO AE address for Lincoln. Would have expected an address change after 6 weeks.
  • Elgin Sink (29 Feb 2020 3:53pm EST) : eLOG received yesterday and hard copy today in central PA…great issue!
  • BMCM JONES 3933 (28 Feb 2020 9:35pm EST) : 350+ USCS eLOGs for March 2020 have been sent to those requesting the eLOG format.
  • Elgin Sink (28 Feb 2020 2:02pm EST) : Here is future TRIPOLI LHA-7 delivery info with commissioning due this summer: https://www.navy.mil/submit/display.asp?story_id=112234
  • Thad W. Kaczkowski (26 Feb 2020 8:50pm EST) : Elgin – I just received covers back from the USS Iwo Jima. One cover cancel was so lite it was not collectible and the other is okay but only has Feb 2020 with no date. So not sure if it is from the 23rd though.
  • Elgin Sink (26 Feb 2020 12:43pm EST) : Did anybody have covers on board the USS IWO JIMA for this historic commemoration: https://www.navy.mil/submit/display.asp?story_id=112171
  • Elgin Sink (23 Feb 2020 3:56pm EST) : Phil, only FEB 2020 shows in the type 9 magenta from the cutter and the other from USAF McMURDO APO AP 96599 is tied on 12 FEB 2020…will send you a scan to your email address on file.
  • guest_PHIL SCHREIBER (23 Feb 2020 12:39pm EST) : ELGIN SINK: WHAT DATE IS INSERTED IN YOUR POLAR STAR POSTMARK SENT FROM MCMURDO? MY COVER CAME BACK TO ME WITH ONLY THE POLAR STAR CANCEL DATED MARCH 2, 2020. THIS COVER DID NOT HAVE A SEPARATE MCMURDO POSTMARK.
  • John Young (23 Feb 2020 10:57am EST) : Still a Florida snowbird until next week and hope my mail has POLAR STAR covers.

Suffering from that cover disease! Doc Rollins was right.

  • Thad W. Kaczkowski (23 Feb 2020 10:04am EST) : John Macco – Yes, it will happen. I just received two covers back yesterday from the USS San Antonio LPD 17 with a cachet on the filler card and no cancel but mailed back in my larger self-addressed stamped envelope with a clear ships cancel, go figure. The COPE’s aren’t like the old Navy Postal Clerks. The mail comes under the Supply Department now and isn’t a top priority because the mails aren’t used as they were 20 or so years ago, communication is electronic now. Most COPE’s don’t even know where or if they have a ships postmark. 20 years ago 99% returns came from Postal Clerks and today you are lucky to get a 5% return from COPE’s. To add to the problem a lot of ships don’t even have post offices any more. The collecting of ship board ship cancels is really dead now and too expensive. Keep in mind when you send to the ship they are under no obligation to handle your request. It’s a shame
  • john macco (22 Feb 2020 5:00pm EST) : Has anybody received covers back with no postmark? The last 3 i have received had no postmark on them. A little education on naval cover collecting needs to be sent.
  • guest_PHIL SCHREIBER (22 Feb 2020 2:35pm EST) : RECEIVED TODAY FEB.22 COVER FROM CGC POLAR STAR POSTMARKED WITH LOCY TYPE 9 DATED MARCH 2, 2O2O WITH LARGE AND SMALL CACHETS.
  • Elgin Sink (21 Feb 2020 4:34pm EST) : Just received today two nice USCGC POLAR STAR WAGB-10 covers cancelled 12 FEB 2020 from USAF McMURDO APO AP 96599…nice cutter large cachet, smaller cutter picture cachet and magenta type ? registry- type cancel from POLAR STAR.
  • John Young (20 Feb 2020 1:59pm EST) : It’s been a while but finally made my first appearance in months. All is well as we are presently on spring break in
    Florida.

Weather is great, plenty of sunshine & early bird specials. Best hamburger are at Duffy’s Grill with happy hour two for one every day

Have to visit that stamp shop in yellow pages like last year

Yesterday was the 79th birthday of the Coast Guard Reserve

    Cheers & beers

  • Elgin Sink (12 Feb 2020 10:58am EST) : USS BOXER 25th Anniversary celebration…https://www.navy.mil/submit/display.asp?story_id=112070
  • Elgin Sink (11 Feb 2020 3:29pm EST) : …Interesting info on new aircraft to delivery mail and supplies to ships: https://www.navy.mil/submit/display.asp?story_id=112047
  • Rich Hoffner (08 Feb 2020 5:35pm EST) : Had a call from “The Caves” during my period of hibernation in FL. Seems that Bath ME post office sent them the covers I have been trying to track down that were sent to Bath post office for events at BIW from early 2019.
  • Rich Hoffner (08 Feb 2020 5:31pm EST) : Thanks you ELGIN SINK for the article on the post office on Diego Garcia, BIOT. I recall many decades ago USCS member “BJ” Spurlock (a Seabee) was station there and serviced many covers for his fellow collectors.
  • Rich Hoffner (06 Feb 2020 2:23pm EST) : Since I am playing the part of a “snow bird” I know that some members have ordered covers from the LOG. Sorry to say I won’t be back in PA until March 1. Any covers ordered will be shipped when I return. Sty warm wherever you are, it’s 80 here today.
  • Rich Hoffner (05 Feb 2020 11:19am EST) : An attempt yesterday to reserve a room at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Milwaukee for our convention in September was unsuccesful. The rooms that Milcopex set aside are gone. This is not a good sign for our members who would have attended. It’s seven months out, perhaps enough time for the Board of Directors to consider a different venue so our members can attend.
  • Elgin Sink (05 Feb 2020 10:32am EST) : Just noticed this interesting info on mail to the remote island base of Diego Garcia: https://www.navy.mil/submit/display.asp?story_id=111995
  • BMCM JONES 3933 (31 Jan 2020 8:37pm EST) : MILCOPEX Convention hotel rooms.

If you plan to attend USCS Convention at the MILCOPEX convention 24-27 September, make your reservations now. The RYDER Golf Tournament is the same weekend and rooms will be scarce.

Rate for MILCOPEX attendees is $109.00 for king room.

Call hotel directly 1-414-764-5300 to make reservations and ask for MILCOPEX block not USCS block.

Make now–your can cancel up to night before with no charge on credit card.

  • Elgin Sink (30 Jan 2020 8:22pm EST) : Thad…My sendings have decreased a great deal over the last few months and limited now for FPO covers directly from the ships.
  • Thad W. Kaczkowski (30 Jan 2020 5:52pm EST) : Elgin – At this point the issues with Honolulu PO is really a lost cause. They will say, like they did, that covers were returned to senders or forwarded to the caves, but obviously they weren’t. Be wise and don’t ever send to the Honolulu PO. They had issues there many years ago but they fixed them and the individual that handled pictorials left and it went back in the toilet again.
  • Elgin Sink (30 Jan 2020 3:32pm EST) : Celia Rodriguez, Customer Service Specialist, 816-545-1345 Celia.Rodriguez@usps.gov at the “Caves” might be able to help with a point-of-contact for some of the USPS issues.
  • Thad W. Kaczkowski (29 Jan 2020 9:25pm EST) : Thanks Rich for the Honolulu update on the pictorials. Honolulu PO never sent my covers back or to the caves. Glad some of the others membership were lucky enough to get something back from the caves.
  • Rich Hoffner (29 Jan 2020 6:12pm EST) : If anyone knows where to file a complaint to the USPS let me know. I don’t think the USPS has a link on their website for complaints. I do recall that during my five years as a PMR the POOM went ballistic if she found a negative message on Yelp against any office in her district. If she received any complaints directly, she gave the offending office or employee five days to rectify the complaint with the complainant and respond to her what was done.
  • Rich Hoffner (29 Jan 2020 6:01pm EST) : Read several messages about the lack of returns from the Honolulu HI post office. When I got the runaround from two employees there one feigned no knowledge and referred my to her boss. He responded he sent all covers back. He had not. I then asked “The Caves” to look int it. They made contact and were promised that all covers in Honolulu and the cancels would be sent to Kansas City to be processed. Kansas City did process what they got from Honolulu. But it seems Honolulu has misplaced some of the requests.
  • Rich Hoffner (29 Jan 2020 5:48pm EST) : Any naval cover collectors in SW FL give me a yell. Expect to see the NY Coastie mid-month down here, perhaps an Impromptu USCS gathering?
  • Rich Hoffner (29 Jan 2020 5:43pm EST) : I was back in PA for several days and as Neal reported the TOLEDO cancel was submitted to GROTON. There is no pictorial in Norfolk. Several other pictorials were submitted for the next month or so.
  • Rich Hoffner (29 Jan 2020 5:37pm EST) : Electronic version of the USCS Log arrived on my iPod today. On pg. 30 several Decatur Chapter covers are offered for sale. If you order please expect a 30 day delay. I am in the Sunshine state until the end of February. I’ll have an avalanche of mail to wade through when I get back. And yes, I am suffering from cover withdrawal.
  • BMCM JONES 3933 (29 Jan 2020 2:10am EST) : 367 eLOGs for February 2020 have been sent to those requesting the eLOG format.

    Enjoy.

    Richard Jones
    Log editor

  • Elgin Sink (23 Jan 2020 6:08pm EST) : Thanks Phil for the ship address…I had not looked for the address yet so I will send covers this weekend for the ships mentioned.
  • guest PHIL SCHREIBER (23 Jan 2020 4:37pm EST) : THANK YOU ELGIN. FOR F
    REEZE COVERS
    I’M USING THIS ADDRESS
    TO: COMMANDING OFFICER, MSC SHIP
    “SLNC MAGOTHY”
    OPERATION DEEP FREEZE
    EN ROUTE ANTARCTICA
    C/O POST OFFICE
    UNIT 11O54
    APO 96531-9998
  • Elgin Sink (23 Jan 2020 1:56pm EST) : Operation Deep Freeze 2020 collectors might be interested in the following: https://www.navy.mil/submit/display.asp?story_id=111904
  • Neal Mills (22 Jan 2020 4:24pm EST) : Do NOT submit USS TOLEDO 25th anniversary pictorial postmark requests to Norfolk. Rich Hoffner is currently on vacation in Florida and his flight back to Pennsylvania was cancelled due to bad weather. Consequently, he is going to miss the submission window for a Norfolk pictorial cancel. USS TOLEDO’s homeport is Groton and Rich plans to work with Groton to get a 25th anniversary postmark from Groton vice Norfolk. Suggest not submitting to Groton until Rich gets back to Pennsylvania and has a chance to submit the needed paperwork. Please pass the above along to anyone you know that might be submitting a pictorial postmark request to Norfolk.
  • John Young (18 Jan 2020 6:53pm EST) : Ahoy Mates,
USCGC John MIDGETT (WHEC 726) will
be decommissioned on March 26, 2020 at
Base Seattle. Why not try for covers, as her mailing address:
    1519 Alaskan Way S
    Seattle WA 98134

It should be noted that CG added Bos’n John Midgett’s first name since comm’g
of USCGC MIDGETT (WMSL 757) last summer.

Never did get back formal comm’g covers from Honolulu!

  • Neal Mills (17 Jan 2020 7:56pm EST) : Mike, the boat left Groton last year on April 23. Don’t know why the mail wasn’t forwarded. Someone was just being lazy.
  • Mike Meister (17 Jan 2020 5:18pm EST) : Neal I sent them last May to their FPO AE address where they still were. Not sure where the request has been for the last 8 months.
  • Tom Priddy (17 Jan 2020 11:18am EST) : I’m in Greenville, South Carolina, and looking for any ship cancellation collectors in my area. Thank you.
  • Neal Mills (17 Jan 2020 9:38am EST) : Mike – Where did you send the covers?
  • Mike Meister (16 Jan 2020 3:32pm EST) : My covers that I sent to USS Pittsburgh were returned today with the finger “closed unit or zip code” This request was postmarked May 30th!
  • John Young (07 Jan 2020 5:08am EST) : Hard copy of January Log arrived in lower Hudson Valley yesterday and I’m looking forward to New Jersey Chapter meeting tonight.
  • Elgin Sink (06 Jan 2020 3:57pm EST) : My “periodical rate” January Log was received today in “central” PA and agree that it is another great issue.
  • Rich Hoffner (03 Jan 2020 8:32pm EST) : First Class Log arrived in the Indian Valley of SE PA today. Great issue again.
  • Rich Hoffner (02 Jan 2020 9:41pm EST) : LCDR Chris Jasnoch, USCG will be bringing the USCGC WALNUT WLB 205 from Honolulu HI to Curtis Bay MD (USCG Yard) for a complete overhaul. He departs Jan 15. There will be a pictorial aboard for the departure. No pictorial at Honolulu post office, so DO NOT send there. Repeat, don’t send to the Honolulu PO. Send up to 3 covers to LCDR Jasnoch, USCG, Commanding Officer, USCGC WALNUT WLB 205. 400 Sand Island Parkway, Honolulu HI 96818. He might be able to do covers for the Panama Canal transit and arrival at Baltimore. DO IT QUICKLY, they depart on January 15th. Arrival in Baltimore expected on 16 February. LCDR will assume command of USCGC JUNIPER WLB 201 in the fall.
